Certificate in Aquatic Studies tutors build conservation hatchery in Malaysia

The Certificate in Aquatic Studies department staff at MTI recently designed and built a fish hatchery in Malaysia. Aquatic Studies tutors Adrian Paarman and Quentin O'Brien spent a month in Malaysia overseeing the construction of the facility with a host of local tradesmen.

The hatchery is intended to breed an endangered species of carp native to the area which also have aquaculture potential as a food fish. Once fully operational the resultant fingerlings will be supplied to the onsite fish farm and other satellite fish farms and grown on for either release in restocking programs or for supply to the fish markets.

The hatchery was designed by MTI technical staff and all equipment supplied by MTI though it's network of trusted aquaculture equipment wholesalers.

Head researcher, hatchery scientist and Certificate in Aquatic Studies lecturer, Dr Tagried Kurwie, will return to Malaysia periodically until satisfactory protocol for breeding this species is established and the local operators are fully trained.
