This 17 week course has been designed to meet the mandatory requirements of regulation III/1 of the STCW Convention for the training requirements of Engineers Officers in charge of a watch in a manned engine room or designated duty engineers in a periodically unmanned engine room as set out in section A III/1 of the STCW Code.
You will learn to:
- Maintain a safe engineering watch
- Use English in written and oral form
- Operate main and auxiliary machinery and associated control systems
- Operate pumping systems and associated control systems
- Operator alternator, generators and control systems
- Maintain marine engineering systems, including control systems
- Ensure compliance with pollution prevention requirements
- Maintain seaworthiness of the ship
- Prevent control and fight fires on board
- Operate life saving appliances
- Apply medical first aid on board ship
- Monitor compliance with legislative requirements
- Use appropriate tools for fabrication and repair operations typically performed on ships*
- Use hand tools and measuring equipment for dismantling, maintenance, repair and re assembly of ship board plant and equipment*
- Use hand tools, electrical and electronic measuring and test equipment for fault finding, maintenance and repair operations*
*A MNZ approved Engineering Trade Certificate is required for entry to the MTI Certificate in Marine Engineering (Class 3). It is expected that students will be able to perform these competencies prior to enrolment.
Entry Criteria: Candidates must be 19 years and over and have proof of acceptable formal engineering training. This can be an apprenticeship as a fitter/turner or heavy diesel mechanic or an appropriate National Certificate. Candidates should understand fundamental maths, principles of applied science and engineering.

Qualification: On successful completion of this course the candidate will be awarded the Maritime New Zealand Certificate in Marine Engineering Class 3 (MEC 3).
