Certificated Deckhand

This programme is supported by Maritime Management Services and Competenz.

The National Certificate in Maritime (L2) Certificated Deckhand is suited to people employed as deckhands on commercial vessels operating in inshore and coastal waters. Most of the qualification syllabus can be achieved on-job and recognises the skills and knowledge already established by employees on commercial vessel i.e. health and safety, first aid, navigation and survival at sea.


Qualification

On successful completion of this Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) approved  programme you will receive the:

  • National Certificate in Maritime (L2) - Certificated Deckhand

You will also be entitled to sit your CDH examination on meeting the MNZ requirements below.

  • Complete both an approved Task Book and 'recognised training programme'
  • Be over 16 years of age
  • Hold a Radio Operators Certificate
  • Hold a current First Aid certificate
  • Pass an eye sight test (at student cost)
  • Pass an MNZ fit and proper person approval
  • Complete 3 months commercial sea service of which 2 months must be completed on a vessel over 6 meters. NB: All sea service can be completed whilst undertaking this CDH programme.

Once your enrolment has been processed you will receive a complimentary voucher booklet detailing your free enrolment onto auxiliary certificate courses; inclusive of:

  • Crowd Management and Safety Certificate
  • Marine Radio Operators Certificate
  • STCW Basic First Aid
  • STCW Basic Sea Survival
  • STCW Basic Fire Fighting
  • STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

Please note that there are terms and conditions associated with the above auxiliary certificate courses. Certificates will not be issued to students who have not successfully completed the entire National Certificate in Maritime (L2) Certificated Deckhand programme which may take up tp approx. 1 year to complete.

Fees

$470.00 incl GST. Please note Maritime New Zealand costs are not covered by the programme fees.

Programme fees cover:

  • All tuition requirements
  • Student CDH Task Book
  • All examination fees (including CDH examination)
  • All NZQA unit standard costs.

To gain your MNZ CDH certificate you will need to pay MNZ an application fee - approx $236.00

NOTE: Should a student fail the Certificated Deckhand examination there is a re-sit chaarge of $100.00. MNZ may also require a fee to issue another permit. You must re-sit your exam after a minimum of one month.

Entry Requirement

Restricted to those 16 years or older and employed within the Maritime industry.

Course Dates

Monthly intakes. Complimentary auxiliary certificate courses as per advertised dates.

Duration

12 months to complete from month of enrolment.

Cross Crediting

There is a rigorous cross credit assessment programme to ensure recognition of any current competencies. (e.g. if the student holds a current First Aid certificate they will not be required to complete this module again. (However they must supply a copy as proof). Please note that programme fees will not be reduced.

Medical Requirements

The auxiliary STCW basic training courses require students to provide a medical certificate (at the students cost) prior to their acceptance onto these modules. Please click here to download medical form.
